OBJECT OF THE GAME & HOW TO PLAY

The object of The Game Plan Game, which is suitable for families with children 4-8 years old, is for players to answer questions specifically designed to help children learn about safe and smart decision making. Players take turns rolling the dice, and moving the appropriate number of spaces on the board. The player whose turn it is draws a card corresponding to the space they land on: Smart & Safe, Move & Groove, Say & Spell, or Nice & Neat. The game leader, or the player, then reads the question on the card and the player whose turn it is answers or performs the action on the card. Responses earn them tokens and the right to move along the board, ultimately leading them to the finish line. Some questions are answered verbally, while some require getting up and moving around!

The “TALK”

How should I start the conversation about being smart about safety?

We know you talk to your children about safety but figuring out the when, and how, can be tough sometimes. The Game Plan Game can be a catalyst for those important conversations. To help break the ice, we’ve put together some guidelines for you, which are based on current research about what children do and don’t understand about personal safety at different ages. You know your child best, so pick conversations that seem appropriate for your child; The important thing is to start somewhere. Once you start talking about personal safety, you’ll find new ways to teach your child about their community and the world around them. It can be fun, and you’ll be helping your child to learn, grow, and stay safe.

The “TIME”

When should I start talking with my child about personal safety?

Right now! Research suggests that children as young as three (3) understand some aspects of personal safety. Talk to your child about personal safety often, in many different places. If it feels like a normal conversation, your child will feel less scared and less anxious. You might feel less anxious too!

The “TOPIC”

Should I teach everything to my child all at once, or space out the teaching over several weeks and months?

Learning about personal safety is an ongoing and developing process. Even as adults, we learn new ways to keep ourselves safe. Having small, frequent conversations with your child will help them to normalize conversations about personal safety, and it will give them more chances to practice their new safety skills. Some families have found that having twice yearly “family safety nights” can be a fun way to celebrate safety and remind each other of their family’s safety rules. These should complement, not replace, ordinary and everyday conversations about safety.

Brand’s Story

Ellie Kanner and Lisa Solomon became fast friends through their kids at preschool. One day, their school brought in a specialist to explain the importance of teaching children about keeping their bodies safe. It got them thinking about all of the life lessons they wanted their kids to learn as they grew and gained more independence.

Having both spent countless hours playing board games with their kids, they searched for a game that not only featured the content they wanted to introduce to their kids but also a FUN game with interactive elements to help the lessons stick. They scoured toy stores and online options but nothing fit. So the duo decided to create their own game and from there The Game Plan Game was born. Children can learn safety information, good manners and social skills by playing The Game Plan Game. Knowledge is power and the more confidence and tools children have to handle challenging situations, the better. Ellie and Lisa’s mission is for every child to have the knowledge and skills to always have a game plan!
